A Kitchen Makeover Must See!

When the owners of this home decided on a kitchen makeover, they had a budget in mind and knew exactly the look they were after. The tired old kitchen was dated and needed a complete overhaul, but the budget didn’t allow for a complete re-design of the space, so the owners decided on keeping the original frame and layout for the new kitchen and updating the benches, cupboard doors and tiling.  Although the owners kept within a budget the result is an amazing transformation!

There aren’t any better pictures available of the kitchen before the makeover, but here are a few snippets of the previous tiles. It is also easy to see the outdated colours of the previous kitchen in these ‘during renovation’ pictures and the wooden cupboards had begun to swell and discolour.

How to Do a Kitchen Makeover on a Limited Budget:

– Kitchen frames and layout unchanged. Cupboard doors, bench tops and tiling were replaced.

– Shopped around for best quote before deciding how to go about the makeover and which builder to choose.

– Kept the old kitchen sink, just polished it up before re-installing.

– Didn’t over spend on appliances. Kept to a budget when choosing new cooktop and oven.

– Owners removed the old tiles themselves.

– Kept old kickboard, as didn’t need replacing.

Tips from the owners:

–  If possible view previous work done by the builder, so that you know the quality of finishes and workmanship.

– By using the builders own tiler and electrician the job got done quickly and seamlessly, without any communication problems between trades.

– Communicate clearly exactly what you want before the renovation begins.

– Resolve any work you are unhappy with before final payment is made.

– keep an ideas folder of clippings from home magazines. Show the builder pictures of what look you are after.

The white subway tiles as a splashback and the white cupboard doors were chosen to ensure that the kitchen wont easily date, it’s a classic look for any kitchen. A stone bench top was chosen for durability and look. By choosing to keep the original structure and frame of the kitchen, the owners saved approximately $8000!
