10 Amazing Movie Houses!

by

Does anyone else watch a movie for the amazing house in it? I have to admit, sometimes I love a movie just for the houses in it. So I thought I would put a fun blog together for Sunday reading and list my favourite movie houses! Often the house or setting in a movie will play such a big part that it almost becomes another character, or part of the characters. From big mansions to beautiful little cottages, there are some amazing homes in movies. For the sake of ‘research’ I re-watched a few of these movies for the hundredth time (much to my husbands dismay). There are so many great movie houses, but these are the first 10 that came to mind. Let me know in the comments which movie houses you love!

It’s Complicated

Meryl Streep’s house in It’s Complicated is my very favourite movie house! The relaxed and cosy ranch style home really makes this movie! The movie is set in Santa Barbara, California and the home in the movie has that relaxed Californian style I love. The real home is actually in California, but the interiors were filmed on a sound stage in New York, so although the interiors aren’t real life they are made to look very lived in. The movie was directed by Nancy Meyers, who also directed a couple of my other favourites on this list!

The Holiday

Kate Winslet’s character in ‘The Holiday’ lives in Rosehill Cottage and it is the ultimate English cottage! The first scene of the cottage steeped in snow is so inviting that I couldn’t wait to see inside and it doesn’t disappoint! Unfortunately ‘Rosehill Cottage’  was just built for production, but once again the sets on this Nancy Meyers movie don’t disappoint. The other homes in this movie are also gorgeous, both set in Los Angeles and England.

This is 40 and Knocked Up

The family home in ‘This is 40’ and ‘Knocked Up’ is practically perfect, so I had to put it on the list! The same house featured in both the movies as Pete and Debbie’s house and is in Los Angeles. I loved the lived- in, family look of the house and the beautiful backyard. The real house in Los Angeles was used for both the interior and exterior filming in the movies.

The Proposal

The house from the movie ‘The Proposal’ is breathtaking right from the first scene! The moment it first appears in the movie you instantly want to see more of it! The movie is set in Alaska and the home appears to be on it’s own island, but the actual house is near Boston. The interiors were shot on a sound stage.

I absolutely loved this movie with Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche! Most of the movie was set in a holiday house on Rhode Island, which had such an inviting, familiar feel about it. The house is actually a holiday house that can be rented out and both the interior and exterior was shot in the home.

The Family Stone

This movie has a great cast and a gorgeous setting to go along with it. The white colonial house in the ‘Family Stone’ has that lived-in family feel and is the perfect place for all the family members to come together for Christmas. The interiors, which were on a sound stage, were a little cluttered and messy, but it just added to that natural and relaxed feel of the home. The exteriors are of a real home.

 Something’s Gotta Give

Who else absolutely loved the beach house in ‘Something’s Gotta Give’? Another Nancy Meyers movie, the house in this movie really became part of the relationship between Dianne Keaton’s and Jack Nicholson’s characters. It has that quintessential Hamptons look, lots of whites and creams and a beautiful beach at the back door.

I may have only been eight when this movie came out, but I still remember loving that little yellow house! The movie is really based around the story of the house that Steve Martin’s character designs. The little house was built just for the movie, but the architects still have the original plans available.

 August: Osage County

It’s hard to really notice the house in this movie when the characters are so eye-opening, but it still managed to catch my eye! Although a little run down and in need of a renovation, it is a beautiful old farmhouse in Oklahoma. The real exteriors and interiors were used for the movie and after filming the house was put up for sale.

Bewitched Movie

Although this wasn’t my favourite movie, I do remember loving this little cottage! I think I may have watched this at the time, just because I love Will Ferrell, but the house didn’t let me down. The exteriors were a real house in Los Angeles and the interiors were a set built just for the movie. It had such an inviting, cottage feel and I loved the light, bright interiors.
