With this freezing weather at the moment it’s definitely time to cosy up at home. Often when you think of winter décor whites and neutrals are not what come to mind. Mostly considered light, breezy, minimal or even clinical, here are a few tips to make neutral décor warm and cosy!

Layers
It is easy to make neutrals seem cosy by creating layers. This might mean adding layers to the bed, adding rugs in different rooms or adding throws and blankets in the lounge room. For example a neutral dining room can be made to feel cosier without having to add warm colours, just by adding layers. Adding a rug under the dining table or cushions to the dining chairs can create a cosy feel while still being neutral. Extra cushions and throw rugs on the lounge will create warmth or large floor cushions will create layers. Even a fabric wall hanging in a soft texture can help a room feel cosier, it’s just a matter of making bare surfaces feel warmer. Don’t be afraid to layer different tones of whites, creams, taupes and greys, this is the best way to make a neutral colour scheme feel cosy

Texture

Texture is one of the best ways to create a cosy feel in a neutral colour scheme. Choosing textures that are warm and inviting like faux furs, chunky knits, raw linen or wool rugs can really give the sense of cosy. Add a beautiful knitted blanket to a bed or layer rugs in different neutral textures to create warmth underfoot. Adding a rug and throw in similar tones of whites or creams, but in different textures makes a neutral colour scheme a little more interesting. As with adding layers, adding texture to bare surfaces creates warmth, whether it’s on the floor, walls or adding to bedding and furniture. Cushions in different woven textures like wool or chunky woven cotton on a bare lounge will make the difference and you can still stick to the neutral colour scheme, if that is your preference.

Pattern

Often when you think pattern you think colour, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Adding neutral patterns to a neutral colour scheme can create a warmer feel to the room. There are lovely self patterned neutrals in bed linen, cushions and rugs that create a cosy feel without having to change the colour scheme of the room. By adding a neutral pattern in the place of a plain fabric you can create interest and texture in a room. Choose grey patterned pillowcases for a grey linen bed and you will see the difference immediately, it really does bring a cosier feel to the bedroom. The idea of adding neutral patterns to create warmth and a cosy feel also ties back to layering and texture, it all goes hand in hand when creating a cosy neutral home.

If you are a lover of neutral décor don’t change your whole colour scheme or feel like you have to add colour to make your home cosy for winter. By adding layers, texture and pattern in neutral tones it is easy to create coziness in a neutral home!
