We are currently building our family home on the coast in northern N.S.W, so I thought I would share a little bit with you! We have decided to built our home in two stages, so at the moment we are building the first stage of the home, which is the main part of the house, then in the future we will add another living area and bedroom. Our land is just over 1km from the beach, so we have chosen a coastal/beachy feel for our architecture and décor. Most of all we have beautiful views that we wanted to take full advantage of!

The block is sloping, so we had the home designed in a way that makes the most of the north facing aspect and the views, while also having room for a big yard for the kids. Luckily the block has been used in a way that there will be a nice big flat yard at the top of the block for the kids!

The open plan living area enjoys the views and high ceilings, we really wanted to make the most of this space! There are also three verandahs off the main living areas, making the indoor/outdoor feel seamless. There is also a lot of glass in the living area, again making the most of those views!

The back of the house is where the bedrooms and bathroom are and a deck will lead off the dining room to the flat yard. We decided to do higher ceilings in the bedrooms also, to keep with the open/beachy feel. The kids rooms aren’t huge, but the high ceilings will hopefully give the feel of more space.

We decided to have a double carport under the house with a lockable storage area at the back of the carport. We were worried by only having a carport and not a garage would mean insufficient storage, so we have solved this by having the storage at the back. The front stairs will go up the right hand side next to the block wall and lead up to a covered porch.

You may have seen my previous blog on grey exteriors here, I have been thinking about ways to add a dark shade of grey/ charcoal to our mainly white exterior, so we decided on a charcoal/navy colour for the sheet cladding and an alabaster white for the horizontal cladding. We will also bag and paint the block wall next to the entry stairs in the charcoal/navy colour. The roof is shale grey and the windows are anodised silver. Although most of the exterior will be white, we added the darker colour in places to add interest.

Interior Inspiration

We have already chosen the tiles for the bathroom and kitchen splashback (above), we have chosen a large rectangle matte white for the bathroom walls and a large rectangle grey for the bathroom/laundry/toilet floors. I really liked the matte white for the bathroom walls, instead of a gloss and the grey we have chosen for the floors almost has a cement look, with a sight speck through it. It is also a matte finish, although it looks a little shiny in this picture! Flooring in the rest of the house will be wood look wide vinyl plank. We have chosen a light, lime washed colour to go with the coastal feel. This flooring will go through the whole house except for the bathroom, toilet and laundry, we aren’t having any carpet.

Initially I had wanted a glass splashback for the kitchen, but after choosing white stone benchtops and white cabinetry, I decided the kitchen needed something different for he splashback. Although the splashback tiles I have chosen are still white, the herringbone style will add some texture! These tiles will also go behind the vanity in the bathroom and in the niche in the shower, tying all the tiling together.
Being a décor addict, I am mostly excited to share the styling and décor of the home once we have moved in. I have so many ideas and can’t wait to bring it all together in my own home. We also have landscaping ideas which we will be working on once we move in, I can’t wait to share it all with you!
