When I think of masculine décor I think dark hues, wood, leather, metal and clean lines. Along with geometric prints and angular objects, all these elements create a masculine feel to décor. This is not to say all of these elements can’t be used in any type of décor, but often create a masculine aesthetic. I love the idea of dark, moody colours on the walls and used in textiles and objects throughout the home. Its a perfect look for cooler months and can actually work really well mixed with lighter colours, fabrics and accessories.
Quick Tips for Masculine Décor
1. Think clean lines and modern décor, don’t choose fussy accessories or bulky textiles. For example a bed layered with thin quilts and no cushions works better with a masculine look.
2. Mix dark colours and tones. Try putting dark tones together that you wouldn’t normally, such as black and navy. You will be surprised what actually works.
3. Use natural materials to lighten the look. Natural materials like wood, cane and stone are a great way to lighten the look while still giving a masculine feel to the room.
4. Simple artwork looks perfect in a masculine style room. Choose one large piece of art over lots of different pieces to give a dramatic effect.
5. Keep it simple! Styling for a masculine look means using the ‘less is more’ mantra. Just choose a few beautiful items to display instead of lots of knick knacks.
Although a moody, masculine look can mean dark colours and angular shapes it is a style that can really be inviting and relaxing, using natural finishes and dark colours actually creates a cosy feel. Mix tones of grey, black and blue to create a dramatic look and add accents of natural materials to tone down the dark colours. Although the dark colours of these rooms seem a bold choice they work perfectly against lighter colours and materials, which helps create more of a neutral look. Its all about mixing the right elements and remembering less is always more when it comes to styling!
