Décor Through The Decades

by

Looking back on décor trends is a great way to see how much current trends are influenced from the past,  but most of all it is fun to see the good and the bad trends which were in homes of 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s! There are some trends which have been gladly forgotten, but there are actually a few trends which are making a comeback too! Which trends do you remember or love from the decor through the decades? The 1950’s saw a move to more industrial and practical design. Architecture was open and airy, making homes appear more spacious and creating living spaces for large families. The clean architectural lines were contrasted with geometric shapes seen in furniture and lighting and the pastels seen in kitchens of 1950’s. There was a new use of plastics in the furniture and accessories of the 1950’s, a nod to a modern spin on décor.

The 1960’s saw the introduction of lots of patterned fabrics and furniture! Black and white and coloured patterns were a nod to the ‘Mod’ look of the 60’s, with black and white being contrasted with pops of bright colour. There was also the introduction of the bean bag and pod chairs in the 1960’s, which added a sense of fun to design. Other décor items which stood out in the 1960’s were lava lamps and shag pile carpets, which are two items which thankfully haven’t resurfaced yet!

The 1970’s saw a sense of freedom and fun enter the realm of home décor, through colour and fun accessories! The colours of the 1970’s were turquoise, green, yellow, brown and orange all being used side by side. Fun accessories like macramé and wall hangings and a lot of cane furniture were prevalent. Fabrics and materials were changing with the common use of glass and vinyl in the design and décor of the 1970’s.

Along with the 1980’s came a whole new look in home décor! The bright colours of the 1970’s décor were replaced with peaches, apricots and black and white colour schemes. Although the use of softer colours was prevalent in 80’s décor, pattern was still used a lot in the home in chintz fabrics. The 1980’s are often considered one of the worst eras for style and it seems that 80’s home décor also lived up to that tag, but it was the stepping stone to a much more subdued style in the 90’s!

The décor of the 1990’s was a move back to basics, with a lot of white and beige colours used in home design. White kitchens were prevalent and the white colour schemes in general created a soothing and serene home. Light and blonde woods were seen everywhere, with colour seen in blue and white accessories and pops of hunter green or golden yellow. The 1990’s also saw the use of painting techniques for interior walls, like sponging, giving walls an interesting look to say the least! The use of white and light woods was a big departure from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s but also a step towards the colours and style we see in current décor trends!
