Finding an unwanted house and transporting it to another location to renovate for sale or rent, is the greatest form of recycling you can do. Mr and Mrs Belle 1 have engage the services of Arthur Redhouse’s “Redhouse House Removals” located in Queensland to find Queenslander that they can relocate and renovate to create a beautiful home on a budget which give them a profitable project.
We caught up with Deb from Redhouse House Removals to ask about their business.

What does a relocatable home company actually do?
“We reposition houses to allow for small subdivisions, we buy and sell houses, transport them to their new site, raise houses for flood mitigation or to allow clients to build underneath, and restump/stump the house when it is in it’s final position. We can also store your house for a period of time in our holding yard.”
What does your service include (what exactly does a client get for their payment)?
“If someone is purchasing a house from us, the list price includes the house, delivery within 100km of its current location (in Qld) stumping to 1.0m high above ground using 75x75x4mm Duragal steel posts with a standard stump hole of 450x900mm.
Redhouse pay for all Police and pilot escorts.”
Where do you find your homes?
“Developers mostly; we have built a relationship with several that has spanned many years – when they have a new project they phone us first to see if the house is the kind we are interested in. The ratio of developers to private sales is around 70/30%”

Generally, how much does it cost for people to buy your homes?
“How long is a piece of string? Every house is in a different condition to the last – you can expect to get a basic Queenslander style in reasonable condition for around $85000-$90000. Houses that are renovated already are usually in a higher price bracket, around $125000-$160000.”
Who buys them and what do they do with them?
“People with an eye for history, quality and budget. We are finding a big push in the Tree Change market – executives from cities looking for a quieter lifestyle in the coastal areas around Byron Bay/Bangalow. We have several clients that are now working on their 4th or 5th home with the goal to be mortgage free by the next one. Some renovate to sell, others renovate to personal taste as their ‘forever’ house.
We also have a select number of clients looking for an additional dwelling for their block i.e. a granny flat or addition to their house. This can often be achieved by relocating a house a lot cheaper than a new build.”
What is the most popular style of home?
“Queenslanders definitely, within that description I would then say a Gabled Queenslander (Ashgrovian style), wrap verandahs and art deco styling are sought after also. VJ internals, French doors – traditional styling.”
What is involved in transporting them and are there special regulations that go with moving a relocatable house? Do these regulations differ from area to area/state to state?
“The process of moving a house starts with paperwork, lots of it. We need approval permits from Councils, Main Roads, Telstra, Optus, Energex/Ergon/Essential energy to name a few. Once the paperwork is done we prepare the house for transport – this can involve cutting it into several pieces depending on the end destination of the house. If we are taking the house to NSW the road transport restrictions are different meaning we have to ‘cut’ the house to meet RTA guidelines. In Qld we can move 8.5m wide easily, in NSW (especially along the front Pacific Hwy) we are restricted to 5.5m wide.
We lower the roof iron and trusses to meet the height guidelines if needed, and load the house to transport. Transport times vary also between states (in Qld over 4.5m wide has to move at night in metro areas, in NSW it is during the day). Once the house has reached its destination we re-assemble it, pitch the roof and replace all cover strips etc that have been taken out (all pieces that are removed are individually numbered to ensure they go back in their original position.)”
Tell us why people should consider using Redhouse House Removals?
“When I asked Arthur this he started singing “we’re simply the best”, to which I told him to not give up his day job! I believe it is attention to detail, the fact that our staff are long term employed and that we do the job from start to finish. (We don’t farm out jobs to different companies)
We also take pride in the fact we will tell you the good, the bad and the ugly so as to hopefully avoid any nasty surprises along the way.
We are selective in our buying process and this reflects in the quality of houses we supply. We don’t have a holding yard full of houses but prefer to match a house to the client to best meet the client’s needs.”
